Expectorated and Induced Sputum specimens are graded prior to acceptance for culture

Specimen Type: Sputum; a description of the type of sputum (expectorated, induced, suctioned, etc.) is required

Special Instructions

Specimens should be processed as soon as possible. If processing is to be delayed, refrigerate specimen for a maximum of 1 hour.

Testing Schedule

Days Performed: Monday through Sunday

 

Times Performed:

Gram Stain: All shifts, 24 hours a day

Cultures: Read on Day Shift only (0600 - 1430)

 

Turn-around Time:

Gram Stain: 1 - 2 hours, may be longer depending upon the time of day, workload, and staffing

Cultures:

   *  Positive cultures are reported as soon as an organism is detected

   *  Negative or normal cultures will be final at 2 days; preliminary reports are filed daily
