Test Code CDIF Clostridium difficile Testing Algorithm

Important Note

Formed specimens will be rejected. The testing algorithm begins with the Lactoferrin assay and if the specimen is positive, testing will continue with the C. difficile glutamate dehydrogenase antigen (GDH) / Toxin assay. Indeterminate specimens will be tested by PCR.

Clostridium difficile is included in the Gastrointestinal Panel (GIPCR).

Infectious

Specimen Required

Specimen Type: Unformed fecal sample

Container / Tube: Clean, airtight container with no preservatives. Preserved specimens will be rejected.

*  Tightly secure all containers, leakage of the specimen may prompt rejection.

CPT Codes

83630: Lactoferrin, Fecal

87449: C. difficile GDH, EIA

87324: C. difficile Toxins A & B, EIA

Special Instructions

If the specimen cannot be delivered to the laboratory promptly, it must be refrigerated and can be stored for up to 72 hours before significant degradation of the toxin is noted. If the refrigerated specimen cannot be delivered to the laboratory within that time frame, the sample may be frozen.
